While I appreciate the Leadership’s efforts under difficult circumstances, I could not support significant increased funding when our national debt hit $15 trillion this week.
Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today regarding his vote on the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2012 (H.R. 2112):
“Tackling the debt crisis comes with tough choices. There were many good things included in this bill, such as provisions protecting our gun rights by prohibiting the Department of Justice from consolidating firearms sales records or maintaining information on persons who have passed firearms background checks and language that prevents taxpayer money from being spent on pro-abortion litigation through the Legal Services Corporation (Legal Aid). H.R. 2112 also eliminated funding for Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grants, which is the program that would give the federal government some local zoning authority.
“While I appreciate the Leadership’s efforts under difficult circumstances, I could not support significant increased funding when our national debt hit $15 trillion this week. The combined spending in this bill is billions more than last year’s amounts for the same appropriation categories. The bottom line is that increased spending in some areas of the bill does not make sense at a time when we do not have any money.”
