Griffith Statement on National Debt Surpassing $16 Trillion
Tuesday,
Sep 4, 2012 -
Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement after the United States Treasury Department announced the national debt had surpassed $16 trillion, having increased more than $5 trillion during President Obama’s term:
“Today’s news is another reminder that America has got to change course. The national debt has now surpassed $16 trillion. To put that into perspective, that is roughly $50,000 per person in the U.S. High debt means a future of high interest, high inflation, and fewer jobs. This path is not prudent or sustainable. For the sake of our children and grandchildren, I hope all of my colleagues are aware of today’s news and recognize that we have an obligation to stop spending money we don’t have. We must learn to live within our means, and borrowing 40 cents on every dollar we spend is unacceptable.”
