Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) today invited students eligible to attend high schools in the Ninth District of Virginia to participate in the Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, also known as the House App Contest. The new House App Contest, established last year by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, is a nationwide event that allows high school students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting a software application (or “app”) for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. Congressman Griffith issued the following statement on the House App Contest: “We have remarkably talented and hardworking students throughout the Ninth District of Virginia. I invite all eligible high school students to participate in the new House App Contest, a great opportunity for students interested in exploring or showcasing their STEM skills. I look forward to seeing the innovative apps that will be submitted by Ninth District students.” To enter, the student or a group of up to four students must create an account on www.challengepost.com and register for the House Student App Contest under Congressman Griffith's profile. Students entering the competition must submit their app’s source code online before midnight on April 30, 2014, and must also provide a video demonstration explaining their app and what they learned through the competition process. Dr. Arthur Carter, the Associate Dean of the College of Science and Technology at Radford University, and Dr. Nicholas Polys, a computer science professor at Virginia Tech, have graciously offered to act as advisors to students throughout the competition. All submitted apps will be evaluated by a panel of impartial individuals within the academic and STEM fields from the Ninth District. The winning app will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website, and will also be on display in a U.S. Capitol exhibit. Additional information and resources can be found at www.morgangriffith.house.gov. Faculty or students may contact James Forester in Congressman Griffith’s Washington, DC office (202) 225-3861 or by email at james.forester@mail.house.gov with questions related to the competition. ### |
