Each year, the U.S. House of Representatives sponsors the Congressional Art Competition for high school students. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today announcing the 2014 Congressional Art Competition for the Ninth District of Virginia:
“Each year, the U.S. House of Representatives sponsors the Congressional Art Competition for high school students. This competition is a great opportunity for a local student to represent the Ninth District in our nation’s capital. Last year, Ella Bishop-Heil, a student at Patrick Henry High School in Glade Spring, won the competition with her drawing entitled ‘A Certain Patrick Henry.’ “This year’s theme is ‘An Artistic Discovery: The History, People, Places, and Things of Virginia’s Ninth Congressional District.’ All submissions are due by March 31 for consideration. I know we have exceptional artists in the Ninth District. If you have children or grandchildren of high school age, I encourage you to pass this information on to them. I look forward to reviewing the submissions.”
Ella Bishop-Heil, a student at Glade Spring's Patrick Henry High School, won the Ninth District's 2013 Congressional Art Competition. A photograph of the final artwork and a signed release form must be submitted to either the Abingdon or Christiansburg office by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 31. The winning artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol complex for one year. In addition, the second and third place selections will be on display in one of the Ninth District offices.
