Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) released the following statement today announcing the winners of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition for the Ninth District: “Congratulations to each of this year’s finalists, two of which are from Salem and two from Bristol! Selected as First Place this year by our panel of judges from around the Ninth District is Selene Geier from the Salem Art Center for her oil on canvas piece entitled Rush. I look forward to having Rush, which depicts a Cherokee Indian, on display in our nation’s capital for the next year for visitors to enjoy. The artwork of the runners-up will be displayed in my offices in Abingdon, Christiansburg, and Washington.” “As in previous years, we received a number of impressive entries by talented, creative young Virginians. I am proud of these students and impressed by their work, and applaud all those who participated.” Receiving Second Place for his acrylic painting entitled Approaching the Knob is Hunter Bell from Salem High School. Tying for third place are Virginia High School students Berkeley Richard for her watercolor piece entitled Venerating Virginia and Kristian Wilson for her piece Music is Born, which was made with colored pencils. Attached is a photo from Saturday’s ceremony at which the winners of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition for the Ninth District were announced. To Griffith’s right is First Place finisher Selene Geier. To her right is Kristian Wilson and then Hunter Bell, followed by Griffith’s District Director Michelle Jenkins holding Berkeley Richard’s watercolor painting.
