Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today marking the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorists attacks. “Fifteen years ago today, our nation was attacked by terrorists. Like many of you, I distinctly remember where I was when the first plane hit. On what started out as a typical Tuesday morning, I was in my office. My assistant, Terry Haynie, called me into her office shortly before 9 a.m. because she had just seen the news coverage of the first plane hitting the North Tower in New York City. We could not understand how a plane could have gotten so off course that it could hit a building. Then we watched live as the second plane crashed into the South Tower, and we knew the United States was under attack.” “Later that day, I went out and bought an American flag to fly at my office, because I wanted to display my confidence that we, as Americans, will never be defeated.” “Today, as we pause to remember the innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001, we must also remember the fight to protect our freedoms is never over. We reflect on the dedication of those who fight to keep America safe, honor the sacrifice of those lost, and send prayers for comfort to those who lost a loved one on that tragic day, from New York to the Pentagon to a field in Pennsylvania.” “When I walk into the U.S. Capitol, I am reminded of Flight 93, believed to have been headed to destroy the Capitol, and taken down by the courageous men and women on board. I am filled with sorrow for the innocent victims, and also filled with immense pride in our nation when I reflect on the spirit shown by so many of my fellow Americans on that terrible day.” “I am thankful for all brave Americans who have selflessly put their lives on the line, or lost their lives, to keep our communities safe and protect our way of life. May God continue to bless these United States of America.” “And as you reflect on this day, let’s remember America should never accept defeat, defeatism, or being second best.” Above is a photo of Congressman Griffith and his colleagues at Friday’s House Remembrance Ceremony of the Fifteenth Anniversary of September 11, 2001, on the House Steps of the U.S. Capitol. ### |
