GRIFFITH INTRODUCES ‘STATE LEGISLATIVE VETO’
Washington,
March 31, 2011
For too long, states have faced costly federal mandates and burdensome regulations. The states have had no choice but to comply.
Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today regarding his recently introduced legislation, H.J. Res 46: “For too long, states have faced costly federal mandates and burdensome regulations. The states have had no choice but to comply. H.J. Res 46 would empower a supermajority of the states to void any federal law or regulation – essentially creating a ‘state legislative veto.’ Repeal would require the consensus of two-thirds of state legislatures. If states feel a certain law or executive branch regulation is too onerous, they ought to be able to override Washington. “Article V of the Constitution allows two-thirds of state legislatures to propose changes to the Constitution by way of a Convention. Since that mechanism exists for changes to the Constitution, why shouldn’t states have a weapon regarding overreaching federal laws and regulations?” ### |
