GRIFFITH ON TROOP FUNDING BILL

Washington, April 7, 2011
I support our troops. The bill passed today by the House fully funds the Department of Defense through the end of this fiscal year and ensures that our troops are paid on time.

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today after passage of H.R. 1363 in the House:

“I support our troops. The bill passed today by the House fully funds the Department of Defense through the end of this fiscal year and ensures that our troops are paid on time. If the Democrats in the Senate fail to take action or President Obama vetoes the bill, they are ignoring the needs of our men and women in uniform. With troops engaged in three conflicts, we simply can not leave them dangling in the wind.

“When the Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate last year, they failed to do their job and didn’t even pass a budget for 2011. They intentionally did a short term CR, lasting only until March 4, 2011, in order to create a chaotic situation for the new Congress. House Republicans put forth a plan 47 days ago that offered $61 billion in spending cuts and would keep the federal government operating through the end of this fiscal year. Yet, the Senate and the President have taken no action. They have failed to realize the severity of our spending problem or simply don’t care.

“Republicans are doing everything we can to make sure our troops are paid on time and avoid a government shut down. Congress has a responsibility to the American people to keep this nation safe and rein in our crushing debt. The fact of the matter is, if we don’t take immediate action to reduce spending, we are condemning our children and grandchildren to a life of debt, deficits, and despair.”
