Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today after House passage of H.R. 910, the Energy Tax Prevention Act. This legislation would prohibit the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.

“Thank goodness the U.S. House of Representatives decided to rein in the overreaching authority of the EPA by a bi-partisan vote. Unless Congress intervenes, the EPA’s efforts to regulate carbon dioxide and other gases in a manner akin to cap-and-trade will drive electricity rates even higher. Rising energy costs affect every family and business in the 9^th District. I’ve heard from families in the District who’ve had to decide which rooms in their house to heat or made the tough decision to turn down the heat. Regulating greenhouse gases will raise energy costs, making it difficult for the working poor and elderly to adequately heat their homes, and create even more uncertainty for cash-strapped American businesses, hindering job creation and economic growth.

“The Energy Tax Prevention Act will protect Americans from the EPA’s regulatory assault and potentially crippling energy costs. At last, Congress is starting to take the governance of the people, by the people, and for the people out of the hands of unelected bureaucrats. As a button someone recently gave me says, ‘Who elected the EPA?’”
