GRIFFITH STATEMENT ON INDEPENDENCE DAY

Washington, July 4, 2011
Today we celebrate the birth of America. The Second Continental Congress voted on July 2, 1776 to declare their independence from Great Britain.

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today on Independence Day:

“Today we celebrate the birth of America. The Second Continental Congress voted on July 2, 1776 to declare their independence from Great Britain. Two days later, on July 4, they adopted their explanation – the Declaration of Independence – penned by Thomas Jefferson. While the Declaration was not signed by all until later, we remember today as the birth of a new nation free from the tyranny of the King. The Declaration is a symbol of liberty, the resolve of the American people, and the freedom we cherish. Due to the hard work of our Founding Fathers and leaders throughout the years, America has become the greatest nation in the world. Every day I remain committed to fighting to preserve the self-evident truths and freedoms outlined in this document.

“Over the past 235 years, America has faced a number of challenges. We have overcome these challenges only to grow stronger as a nation. Today I am reminded of the price of freedom. The men who signed their names to the Declaration of Independence pledged their life, their fortune, and their sacred honor to the cause of freedom. Many, including our men and women in uniform, continue to make these same sacrifices. I thank them for their service and dedication. May God bless you and your family and may He continue to bless the United States of America."
