  Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today regarding reported cuts (see above) in the White House’s debt limit deal: 

“Cutting just $2 billion from discretionary spending next year does not justify raising the debt ceiling. Congress must focus on fixing Washington’s spending problem and paying down the debt. With a deficit of nearly $1.5 trillion this year and a national debt of roughly $14.3 trillion, a cut of $2 billion, or just $ .002 trillion, is simply not enough. We need substantial cuts and significant changes to the way Washington spends taxpayer dollars. A Balanced Budget Amendment would force the federal government to live within its means and get our fiscal house in order. If the Administration wants a bi-partisan deal, they will have to bring real cuts and solutions to the table. It’s time to tackle the debt now instead of passing it on to our children and grandchildren. As the President said earlier this week, if not now, when?”
