GRIFFITH RESPONDS TO OBAMA ON DOMA

Washington, July 20, 2011
I was disappointed to learn of President Obama’s decision to support the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s announcement this week that he would back a bill that would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA):

“I was disappointed to learn of President Obama’s decision to support the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. I oppose any attempt to redefine marriage and repeal DOMA. If such a proposal were to pass the Senate, I would not expect it to pass in the House.”

The Defense of Marriage Act was passed with bipartisan support in Congress and signed into law by President Clinton in 1996.  DOMA defines marriage as a legal union between a man and a woman.
