GRIFFITH: DISASTER RELIEF STILL ON THE MINDS OF VIRGINIANS

Washington, August 24, 2011
Growing up in the mountains of Virginia, I did not think we had to worry about tornados, but Pulaski and Washington Counties proved otherwise. Disaster relief is not a partisan issue.

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today regarding an announcement by Governor Bob McDonnell that an additional $1.1 million in pledges and donations for the Virginia Disaster Relief Fund has been raised:

“Growing up in the mountains of Virginia, I did not think we had to worry about tornados, but Pulaski and Washington Counties proved otherwise. Disaster relief is not a partisan issue. Members of the Virginia Congressional Delegation –both Republicans and Democrats – worked together to request FEMA assistance for the impacted areas. The denial from FEMA was not the first time the federal government failed to do what Virginia thought they should, but people from across the Commonwealth rose to the occasion to provide much-needed assistance through donations of both time and money. Thanks to the Governor’s leadership and the help of many individuals contributing at ABC stores, along with significant donations by corporations and individuals like Richard and Leslie Gilliam, there will now be resources available to aid those impacted by the severe storms.

“I was honored to participate in Governor McDonnell’s press conference announcing this $1.1 million in private and corporate pledges and donations for the Virginia Disaster Relief Fund. These generous donations by individuals and businesses throughout the Commonwealth make it clear that disaster relief is still very much on the minds of all Virginians. As communities in Southwest Virginia impacted by the severe weather in April continue to recover, I am thankful for all of the volunteers, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, and other state and local officials who have assisted in the recovery process and willingly lent a hand to those impacted.”
