Debt Limit Update

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives spoke loud and clear; a straight $2.4 trillion increase on our national debt limit is a non-starter. Why?  Because simply using the national credit card is the same old irresponsible practice that got us in this mess in the first place. I voted against the increase because, as I have said before, absent significant cuts and a systemic change in the way Washington spends, I will not support an increase.

After meeting with President Obama at the White House on Wednesday, it’s clear that there is real concern about the significant impact of our debt burden on job creation and economic recovery.  Regretfully, my colleagues across the aisle have yet to put forth a viable plan laying out a detailed solution.  To tackle our debt we need real and deep cuts and budget reforms that set us on the path of fiscal responsibility. The United States is borrowing roughly 40 cents of every dollar we spend. Families and businesses can’t do that, and the federal government can’t continue doing it without wrecking our economy.  This level of debt is unsustainable. It appears that some in Congress and the Administration don’t want to face this reality. The federal government must go on a lite money diet or it will eat the American middle class out of house and home.

Reminder: 9th District Military Service Academy Days

Any high school student interested in attending our nation’s military service academies is invited to attend one of these events. Students will have the opportunity to meet with officials from the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy as well as representatives from university level ROTC programs.
