Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement upon initial review of President Obama’s executive orders related to guns:

“Two weeks ago, I was sworn in to my second term in Congress. I once again took the oath and pledged to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.  Upholding that oath, I will work with my colleagues and with other advocates of the Second Amendment to ensure that any new policies do not violate the Constitution and the inherent rights it recognizes.  While many of President Obama’s executive orders appear to be within the parameters of his authority, I am reviewing some and have concerns that doctors are going to feel pressured to ask questions not related to their jobs as doctors. 

“Furthermore, the President has indicated he will, at long last, fill the vacancy of the Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).  The Director of the ATF is responsible for overseeing enforcement of many of our existing gun laws.

“The Second Amendment is one of many issues important to residents of Virginia’s Ninth District and to people across the country.  I will give due consideration to any legislative proposals that may come before the House of Representatives while keeping in mind the hundreds of existing firearms laws in this country and the Second Amendment to the Constitution.”
