Griffith Commends House of Delegates for Retaining Proportional Representation

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) today issued the following statement applauding the Virginia House of Delegates for retaining proportional representation on committees:

“The first vote I cast in public office was against a rules package for the House of Delegates because it did not include proportional representation on committees. I was proud to sponsor a proportional representation amendment that was included as part of the House power-sharing rules package in 1998. The rules passed today by the House of Delegates maintained and extended proportional representation despite the challenge posed by a narrow divide in party affiliation.

“I commend my former colleagues for doing the right thing in the face of adversity. In a legislative body, proportional representation makes sure the people, through their elected representatives, are heard.

“I further congratulate Speaker of the House Kirk Cox on his election as only the third Republican to ever hold that post.”
