Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement today after voting against H.R. 1865: “I abhor the conduct which this bill seeks to address. However, an amendment with language I believe is unconstitutional was attached to this bill. Further, I received a copy of a letter dated today from the U.S. Department of Justice agreeing with my concerns, stating the Department’s objection ‘to this provision because it is unconstitutional.’ “I would have voted for the underlying bill without this unconstitutional amendment. I hope that when considering this measure, the Senate will clean up the language and make it constitutional. If so, I would support such a bill upon its return to the House.” A copy of the Department of Justice’s letter is attached. ### |
