Griffith Introduces Bill to Rename Abingdon Courthouse After H. Emory Widener Jr.

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement after introducing a bill to name the Federal building and United States courthouse in Abingdon after the late Judge H. Emory Widener Jr.:

“Emory Widener led a long and distinguished life of service to the United States. After serving in World War II, he took up the law. First sitting on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia, and then as a Circuit Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit from 1972 to 2007, he issued more than 1,300 opinions. An Abingdon native, Judge Widener had his office in the town’s courthouse for decades. Naming the courthouse after this eminent jurist is a fitting memorial.”

The Washington County Board of Supervisors has passed a resolution urging Congress to rename the building after Judge Widener.
