Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) indicated that she would transmit the articles of impeachment passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on December 18 to the U.S. Senate next week:

“Like any other bill or resolution, sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate is a basic task of the Speaker. The House can take no further action on the impeachment resolution containing the articles, and in previous impeachments, there was no such delay in transmitting the articles between the House and the Senate. She should have sent them weeks ago.

“Many criticized her failure to act. I have argued this failure to discharge her duties in a timely manner rendered the Office of Speaker vacant. Whatever her reason for acting now, it is past time for the Speaker to discharge her duty and transmit the articles so the Senate can begin its trial.”

Background

On January 9, 2020, Griffith made a series of parliamentary inquiries on the House floor regarding whether the Office of Speaker was vacant due to the Speaker’s apparent inability to discharge her duties.

On January 10, 2020, Griffith introduced a House resolution declaring the Office of Speaker vacant.
