Griffith Announces $623,314 to Virginia Tech for Fungal Infection Research

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded Virginia Tech a $623,314 grant for allergy, immunology and transplantation research related to Cryptococcus. This fungus is found naturally in the environment in soil and bird droppings and can infect the lungs and the brain, with most infections impacting individuals with compromised immune systems. U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:

 

“Cryptococcosis is a serious fungal disease that tends to affect immunosuppressive individuals.”

 

“This grant for $623,314 helps Virginia Tech study the impact of the fungus and its potential to cause disease.”
