The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded Virginia Tech a $126,000 subgrant. The funding will support the Quantum Appalachia project, an effort to connect quantum computers and devices for information and resource distribution. U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:
“As quantum computing emerges, Appalachia is fertile ground for the quantum technology market.
“This ARC grant for $126,000 helps the Appalachia region and United States in competing against China and Russia in the future.”
BACKGROUND
$500,000 in ARC funding is awarded to Tennessee Technological University, by which Virginia Tech will receive a subgrant of $126,000.
Final goals of this project include establishing quantum technology startups that boost and diversify the economic growth in Appalachia.
Estimates show the quantum technology market is projected to grow to $106 billion by 2040.
