The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded the Town of Bedford a $1,481,000 grant. The funding will support the potential development of a new intercity passenger rail stop in Bedford. U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:

“Bedford is a growing community with a lot of potential, located between the cities of Roanoke and Lynchburg.

“This DOT grant for nearly $1.5 million helps the Town of Bedford complete preliminary engineering and promote access to passenger rail services.”

BACKGROUND

This project is supported with grant funds from DOT’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program.

The station would be located along tracks owned by Norfolk Southern, with Amtrak also operating along the corridor.

In August, Norfolk Southern reached an agreement with Virginia Passenger Rail Authority to extend Amtrak service to the New River Valley.

The name of this project is entitled “Town of Bedford Virginia Intercity Passenger Rail Stop.”
