The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit denied TikTok’s petition challenging a Congressional law that bans TikTok unless it’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, divests from TikTok. U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:

“I am glad to see that this law was upheld today as it is integral to protecting the United States of America by preventing certain foreign adversaries, like the Chinese Communist Party, from owning and controlling social media and smartphone applications, like TikTok, in the United States.

“This major ruling underscores the legitimacy of this law which prevents foreign surveillance of Americans. I was proud to vote in support of the bill in the Energy & Commerce Committee and on the floor of the House.”

BACKGROUND

H.R. 7521, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, is designed to tackle national security threats like the one posed by TikTok. It was included in this April’s national security package, passed by Congress and signed into law.
