The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded a $3,200,000 grant to Lee County. The funding helps a wastewater treatment project that is supported by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and will promote economic development in western Lee County. U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:

“For years, I am proud to have worked with the necessary partners to advocate for this wastewater treatment project in Lee County.

“After helping secure more than $26 million in federal funding, I believe this ARC grant for $3.2 million will help in the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and installation of new main sewer lines.” 

BACKGROUND

In January 2025, Congressman Griffith joined Virginia Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to announce more than $26 million in federal funding for this project. These federal funds were made available through the disaster supplemental package that Congress passed in 2024. 

In 2024, Congressman Griffith supported the American Relief Act which contained the disaster supplemental package. He continually advocated for the spending package to include disaster relief.

Congressman Griffith’s support for this project included submission of a community funded project request for Fiscal Year 2023.

The project will consist of building a new .3MGD wastewater treatment plant and installing 171,000 linear feet of new gravity and force main sewer lines.

This month, Congressman Griffith participated in a recent Rules Committee hearing to voice his support for funding the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
