U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-Va., is thinking small when it comes to job creation in Virginia’s Ninth Congressional District. And his plan appears to have merit.
Griffith launched his “One More Job” initiative this week aimed at jump starting job creation efforts in Southwest Virginia. His plan is simple. If local and national businesses would consider hiring just one more employee, Griffith correctly argues that the impact on the nation’s unemployment rate would be tremendous.
At the moment, the nation’s unemployment rate continues to hover at around 9 percent, and jobs are still considered the number one concern not only across the nation, but also right here in Virginia’s so-called “Fightin’ Ninth” congressional district.
Griffith’s congressional office recently sent out letters to businesses across Southwest Virginia urging them to consider hiring just one new employee. He is hopeful that many businesses in the region will oblige.
“I have found that the best ideas often come from constituents,” Griffith said Tuesday. “Today my office sent letters to numerous local businesses asking them for their input on what can be done to help create just one more job. Is there a federal regulation in the way? Or can something in the tax code be made more fair? What can we do to make our businesses more competitive?”
Hearing from local businesses is important. Most businesses — whether big or small — could provide critical input on what needs to be done in Washington to help get America’s economy moving again.
It is, after all, businesses that will ultimately get our economy moving again.
However, until those businesses start hiring again, the nation’s unemployment rate will continue to remain stubbornly high — federal stimulus or not.
While it may sound overly simple, Griffith’s “One More Job” initiative is a good, common-sense approach. We encourage businesses big and small to start hiring again — even if it is just one job at a time. We hope other lawmakers will follow Griffith’s lead, and encourage businesses in their respective congressional district to consider the “One More Job” approach as well.
Sometimes a small spark can light a much larger fire. One new job could lead to the creation of several more.
