Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement regarding his vote to support the Stop the War on Coal Act, H.R. 3409:

“Just this week, the Ninth District once again absorbed the devastating impacts of the war on coal.  As another thousand plus jobs are cut from the mining industry, the House took action.  Today’s legislation – the Stop the War on Coal Act – is comprised of a number of bills that aim to stop the EPA's regulatory assault on America’s power sector. 

"It’s important that the American people are made aware of the fact that this assault, though aimed at the coal industry, affects us all.  When coal jobs are cut, the people who supply materials to the coal mines, the people who operate the trains that carry the coal, and the people who work in the ports that ship the coal are all impacted.  Current EPA regulations for coal-fired power plants are not even commercially available today and are threatening to send our electricity rates skyrocketing.  As President Obama admitted in 2008, the cost of these policies will be passed on to consumers.  Who are the consumers?  They’re average, middle-class Americans working hard to try and make it in today’s tough economy.  Sadly, government policies are making their lives harder.

“I have one message for President Obama and EPA Administrator Jackson – do not continue this war on coal.  The American people, their businesses, and their jobs are the ones being hurt the most.”
