Griffith, Herrera Beutler Propose Congressional Pay Cut

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) and Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) have introduced H.R. 391, the Saving Starts With Us Act.  This legislation would cut the pay of Members of Congress, the President, and the Vice President by 10 percent.  Griffith and Herrera Beutler introduced separate bills proposing a 10 percent pay cut in the 112th Congress, but are joining forces in the 113th Congress.  Griffith and Herrera Beutler today issued the following statements on the Savings Starts with Us Act:

Griffith said:  “As discussions continue about securing the American dream for future generations and resolving America’s debt and deficit problem, lawmakers can lead by example.  On its own, the Savings Starts with Us Act may not eliminate the country’s $16 trillion debt, but it could serve as one common-sense step out of the many that will be necessary to return the nation to fiscal stability.  I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Congresswoman Herrera Beutler in advancing this reasonable, responsible legislation.”

Herrera Beutler said:  “The debt is an issue that will affect families and individuals in very personal ways.  We as elected officials should show that solving America’s biggest challenge is personal to us, too.  We’re past due for Congress and the White House to consider major reforms to our federal budget, but we can give those needed reforms a jumpstart by beginning with our own salaries.  I look forward to working with Congressman Griffith to continue building support in Congress until we make this small but important reform a reality.”
