Griffith Asks: “Why the 2,000 Days of Delay?”

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement on the 2,000 days that have passed since an application for the Keystone XL pipeline was first submitted to the U.S. State Department on September 19, 2008:

“Though other pipeline projects requiring a Presidential Permit took 18 to 24 months to review and approve, the Obama Administration has been reviewing the Keystone XL pipeline for 2,000 days – more than five years.  Despite the Keystone XL project having bipartisan backing and the support of business and labor groups alike, the American people continue waiting for the Administration’s decision.

“Earlier this year, the State Department found – again – that the Keystone XL pipeline would not significantly worsen carbon pollution.  Further, pipelines are the safest and most efficient way we can transport this energy resource.  Not only would construction of the Keystone XL pipeline incorporate important safety standards and be built using state-of-the-art technologies, but it will help to create a more energy-independent North America and will also create jobs.

“So why the 2,000 days of delay?  The facts are in.  President Obama and the State Department have slow-walked Keystone XL’s approval process, but it is time to build.”
